What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your computer or mobile device when you visit the site. It enables the website to remember your actions and preferences (such as login, language, font size and other display preferences) over a period of time, so you don’t have to keep re-entering them whenever you come back to the site or browse from one page to another.

How do we use cookies?

On this page, we use cookies in the following ways:

  • We store information in a cookie on whether you have previously visited this page. First-time visitors are displayed a welcome message. Returning visitors as identified by the stored cookie can proceed to the interactive map without further distraction.

  • In a similar way, we notify you of our use of cookies if you have cookies enabled and have not yet accepted our cookie policy. Once you have clicked on “Yes, I agree” in the notification bar, we will not display the notice, thanks to the information stored in a cookie.

  • Finally, we use Google Analytics to gain an insight into how users interact with the map, the timeline and the filters, as well as how they found this page (e.g. through a link on our project web site, a link shared on social media, or from a search engine).

We do this to learn how to improve a user’s experience in such a complex interactive spatio-temporal data visualisation. The knowledge gained from these insights will go into improvements of this page, and inspire future projects of Christoph, Ramon and Tina.

Thank you for helping us make brilliant data visualisations people like you enjoy to explore!

The information in the cookies we use cannot and will not be used to identify you personally. These cookies are not used for any purpose other than those described here.

How to control cookies?

You can control and/or delete cookies as you wish – for details, see cookiesandyou.com. You can delete all cookies that are already on your computer and you can set most browsers to prevent them from being placed. If you do this, however, you may have to manually adjust some preferences every time you visit a site and some services and functionalities may not work.
